New Programs For HI-MN

Green Travel and Womens Travel 101

We are currently developing two new program offerings which will be unveiled at upcoming Travelers Circle events. Green Travel and Womens Travel 101 both address specific travel issues which we feel are important to today's travelers.

Our Green Travel program was developed by volunteer Elizabeth Sanberg, who writes and maintains Go Green Travel Green, a blog dedicated to green travel issues. Elizabeth created an excellent slide show and resource list for those who wish to learn how to green their travels, regardless of how far they are traveling.

The Womens Travel 101 program is being developed by volunteer Heidi Braunwarth, a well seasoned traveler who was looking for an engaging opportunity where she could share her insight and her stories on international travel. The new program is based on a national (HI-USA) program entitled "Women Traveling Solo" but has a broader scope and appeal, making it ideal for any woman or women who are thinking of undertaking international travels for the first time.

Please join us for an upcoming Travelers Circle presentation. For more information, please see our Programming page or contact Jeremy Weizel at the HI-MN office.

Minnesota's Oldest State Park Is Excellent Destination For Local Vacation

Itasca State Park

Minnesota's oldest state park truly contains something for everyone. Aside from the headwaters of one of the greatest rivers in the USA, the park contains large tracts of rare old growth red pine forest, miles of hiking and cycling trails, beautiful lakes for swimming, fishing and recreating, archaelogical sites, rare and endangered flora, and classic wildlife.

Located in the heart of Itasca State Park, across from the public boat launch on Lake Itasca, sits the HI-Mississippi Headwaters Hostel. It is the perfect location for groups, families and individuals looking to explore Itasca. The hostel sleeps 31 people in 6 rooms. Guests may rent a bunk or a private room. The kitchen is large, modern and fully equipped. The hostel is open 7 days a week during summer months.

This summer come explore Itasca State Park, and make the HI-Mississippi Headwaters Hostel your home base. For more information see our hostel web page or contact Sara Parthun, hostel manager.
